MFJ : US manufacturer and distributor of antennas and accessories for the amateur. http://mfjenterprises.com

Mica capacitor : An old-fashioned non-polarised capacitor used in applications where low values of capacitance are required such as in radio circuitry. High voltage ratings make them suitable for RF power amplifiers. A variant is silver mica which is good for critical, frequency-sensitive applications. Typical values are 10 pF to 1 nF.

Mica washer : A clear electrically insulating washer typically mounted between a power transistor and its heatsink. This allows thermal conductivity but electrical insulation between the component and its heat sink.

Microcontroller : A basic computer, often on a small circuit board, that can be programmed to read inputs, generate signals and control electronic circuits.

Microprocessor : An IC that contains all the parts of a computer’s central processing unit.

Microphone : The transducer you speak in to when talking on a transmitter.

Microphone amplifier : A stage in a transmitter than amplifies the sound input from the microphone to a level sufficient for subsequent stages.

Microphone gain : A setting that determines the gain of the microphone amplifier. Too low a setting results in you not being heard while too high a setting causes transmission of extraneous noise.

Micro : x10-6 . One millionth. E.g. microfarad (uF) or microhenry (uH).

Microsat : A small, often low earth orbiting, artificial satellite typically weighing under 100kg.

Microswitch : A small momentary switch often controlled by a lever such as common in electromechanical devices such as CD players and video tape recorders.
